Achievekids,
an agency serving kids 6-22, who do not fit in traditional academic
settings, is expanding from four to six classrooms at the San Jose
school facility, opening spaces for twelve new special education
students. The entire student/classroom structure is being reevaluated
and reconfigured to best meet each students need. This strategy
will allow for students to be in classes that are most appropriate
for their age and skill levels.
Achievekids provides an array of mental health and education services
to support kids and their families.
The most exciting aspect of this expansion is that it makes space available
in all of our classes, for a variety of age and skill levels, allowing us to help even more children benefit from our services,
remarked Michael Gennette, Executive Director of Achievekids.
The new classrooms will incorporate both
new and existing students, thus opening spaces in all classrooms
for new students with a variety of challenges. This expansion offers
great opportunities for existing students by focusing on their needs
and assuring that they are being served at a level that is both
challenging and supportive.
In addition to the new classrooms in San Jose,
Achievekids also has space in
the Palo Alto school site for four additional kids. The new space
is the result of work completed in partnership with Design Response.
Achievekids has found ways to
be more efficient in the use of physical space and thus has created
additional availability in its classrooms.
Achievekids
serves children and youth who have difficult emotional and developmental
disorders that cannot be properly addressed in a traditional academic
setting. Their programs are designed for children and young adults,
ages 6-22, with a variety of diagnoses, such as autism, mental retardation,
and conduct, mood and attention deficit disorders. Achievekids
services reach children and families in San Mateo, Santa Clara,
Santa Cruz, and Alameda counties.
